Day 4 ~ More Pyramids

Today was another full day of exploring pyramids.

This pyramid in Dahshur is the oldest real pyramid.  Ann and Mary Kay went inside while Bonnie and I hiked around it. Also not far from this site is the Bent Pyramid, which was the first attempt to build a real pyramid.

This is a statue of Ramses II in Memphis. Located in middle Egypt, it was the capital of Egypt during the Old Kingdom.  Ramses II is often considered the greatest pharaoh of the Egyptian Empire. Ruling 66 years during 1200’s BC, he lived into his 90’s.

The Step Pyramid in Sakkara was the first pyramid and the largest stone structure in the world at the time. Because of the way is was constructed, it is not considered a true pyramid.

At our lunch stop, this woman was making pita bread in an open oven.  Like so many natives, she welcomes you to take her picture but then expects bakshish (a tip). When we were at the pyramid at Dahshur, I took a picture of a police man on a camel… and yes, even the police expect bakshish.

We had delicious dinner felafel stuffed pitas and Egyptian fries at Tommy and Dennis’s home.
